The Camon C8 is proof that Tecno has finally moved from the low-quality phone mediocrity that has tarnished its name in Kenya. Actually, Tecno has been making amazing budget phones since it launched the J7 boom and the Camon C8.

With a reputation to uphold, the Chinese manufacturer chose to keep the legacy in the C8. Overall, you will get amazing performance off this astonishingly cheap phablet.

Tecno Camon C8 Review – Specs Analysis

            Design and Display

A thin bezel, leathery back and silver frame serves to give the plastic frame an elevated demeanor. Even though the phone is made of and does feel plastic, the look is rather appealing and fulfilling.

The front camera sits at the very top of the 5.5” display with an LED flash just by its side. The softkeys and home button are below the display and the home button will glow whenever you have a notification.

You will get the volume controls to the left and the 3.5mm earphone jack sits to the very top. The right side plays host to your power button and dedicated shutter button while the USB pot is at the bottom of the phone.

The 5.5” IPS capacitative LCD touchscreen might not be the liveliest but it does a great job with its modest 267ppi.

            Under the Hood

The Camon C8 comes with a 3,000mAh non-removable battery. You can, however, see the battery when you open the leather back to access the dual SIM slots (normal and micro SIM) and the microSD slot.

The C8 ships with a 1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 working on a MediaTek MT6735 chipset coupled to a Mali-T760 GPU. This works hand in hand with the 1GB RAM to deliver agreeable performance especially since the phone doesn’t have to waste processing power pushing pixels on a high-res screen.

You will get 16GB of internal storage for your files and apps

            Software and Performance

The Camon C8 gets its punch from the 1.3GHz quad-core as it is 64-bit. This means that the processor can handle more with a mere 1GB of RAM as opposed to 32-bit processors.

The most noticeable thing you will come across upon launching the phone is the custom UX that preinstalls a custom launcher and tons of common apps to your phone. You won’t have to worry about downloading so much at first or immediately after restoring factory settings.

I have to point out that this consumes a staggering 5GB of your storage leaving you with just 10GB of the internal memory. Some would call this bloatware. Others will find it useful.

            The Camera

As I said before, the Tecno Camon C8 is all about the camera. The impressive rear sensor creates vivid images even without calling on the camera application to make adjustments and optimizations. The dual LED flash will make the night shots come to life but it will still give you red eyes when you look straight into it.

Though the camera does a great job on default settings, it is a pity that I couldn’t, rather can’t, modify the shutter speed, white balance, focus and ISO to capture better. The camera software trusts itself to do this better.

And it does! If all you want is a couple of selfies for you Instagram and an occasional stunning landscape or portrait whenever you go out hiking or visit upcountry, the Camon C8 will never disappoint.

            Should you buy it?

Well, why not? Tecno have rediscovered themselves and redeemed their name in their latest Tecno smartphones. The Camon C8 is no different. The price tag makes it quite the bargain. You can get it for just Ksh 12,949 at Jumia.
